This class will exam Taiwan’s economic development. After (1) an introductory section examining long-run demographic change in Taiwan, we will look at (2) Taiwan’s agricultural development in each important crop (sugar, rice, tea…). Then we will quickly deal with (3) development of natural resources (camphor & mining). Finally, we will consider (4) Taiwan’s industrial development. Depending on class size, a student or a group of students will present a couple non-technical papers or chapters from a list of material I will pass out the second week of class. I expect the presentations to be about 15 minutes long. We will then discuss the material presented and then I will present PowerPoint presentations for the second part of the class. Your grades will depend on presentations, class participation and a final. We will decide how these will be weighted once we determine how many people are in the class.
